Blumenauer's Higher Education Sustainability Act Passes House
Bill Passes as Part of College Opportunity and Affordability Act
Washington, DC – Today the House passed the College Opportunity and Affordability Act, which contained Congressman Earl Blumenauer's (D-Ore) Higher Education Sustainability Act. Congressman Blumenauer introduced the Higher Education Sustainability Act in September 2007, and since then it has been endorsed by more than 100 Colleges and Universities, Higher Education Associations, NGOs and Corporations. The bill authorizes a competitive grant program to universities and institutions of higher education to develop, implement and evaluate sustainability curriculums, practices and academic programs.
"As the world's population increases, so does our impact on the environment, which makes it more vital than ever to invest in training the next generation of scientists, engineers, planners and business professionals," said Congressman Blumenauer. "By providing grants to universities and institutions to develop sustainability programs, we can protect the planet while helping maintain America's economic competitiveness. As businesses around the world go green, they need a robust workforce with proper job training. It is evident why so many businesses support this bill: going green is the future, and for America to remain competitive we must start funding programs that will train a new generation of workers."
90% of Fortune 500 CEOs said they want sustainable development to become part of their mission, and the Higher Educations Sustainability Act is an opportunity to meet this need, protect the planet, and ensure that the American economy is well-equipped for the 21st century.
The legislation encourages partnerships with external stake-holders such as non-profits, business alliances and trade associations for developing best practices, engaging students in real-world experiences, and ensuring that sustainability programs remain current. The legislation also establishes a national Higher Education Summit on Sustainability to highlight programs and practices of national distinction and identify partnership opportunities for the Federal Government.
